The future mosquito threat in Europe
In Europe, mosquitoes account for a small but significant element of pest management activity. There is more emphasis on them in the south and in floodwater and coastal areas. Management activities are undertaken by public bodies, pest control companies and through private use of mosquito control products. Unlike tropical zones, the main purpose of mosquito management in Europe is to reduce the nuisance of mosquito bites rather than to prevent disease transmission because mosquito-borne diseases remain relatively rare. However, the picture is changing, with the potential for significant increase in the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases driving more mosquito management activity.
