Export stamps boost US approval decisions in 2012/13
The US EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) completed 2,048 decisions under the Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) in fiscal 2013 (ended September 30th), the tenth year of PRIA operation. That represents a 32% increase over the 1,574 decisions in fiscal 2012 (Agrow No 660, p 18). The OPP attributes the rise to the inclusion of 561 export registration certificate ("gold seal letter") decisions, which were a new PRIA category in fiscal 2013. Among the completed decisions, there were 1,039 (50% of the total) for conventional pesticides, 111 (5%) for biopesticides and 329 (16%) for antimicrobials. A total of 138 applications were withdrawn in fiscal 2013 compared with 123 in the previous year.
