EU restricts methiocarb uses
The European Commission has decided to withdraw authorisations for molluscicide use of methiocarb. The active ingredient gained EU approval in 2007 as a repellent in seed treatments, an insecticide and a molluscicide (Agrow No 514, p 10). The approval was dependent on the notifier, Bayer CropScience, providing confirmatory data on the risk for birds, mammals and non-target arthropods. However, following a review of the information provided, the Commission has concluded that a high risk cannot be excluded even if further risk mitigation measures were to be imposed. Uses as a repellent and insecticide will continue. EU member states must amend or withdraw existing product authorisations by September 19th to reflect the change, and may permit existing stocks to be used up to September 19th 2015.
