US battle lines firmly drawn over 2,4-D GM crops

The vast majority of the more than 10,000 comments submitted on the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's (APHIS) environmental impact statement (EIS) for new genetically modified maize and soybean traits tolerant to the herbicides, 2,4-D and glyphosate, urge the agency to reject Dow's application for deregulation. Opponents cite concerns about the environmental and economic impact from increased use of 2,4-D, a herbicide that has been used by US farmers for more than 60 years, and suggest that approval of the new crops would leave the agency on shaky legal ground.
