US soybean area set for new record
US soybean plantings are expected to increase by 6.5% to a record 81.5 million acres (33 million ha) this year, according to the USDA's March survey. The area is forecast either to rise or remain unchanged from last year in all states with the exception of Missouri and Oklahoma. The largest increase is expected in North Dakota where plantings are projected to rise by 21.5% to some 5.7 million acres. Large increases are also forecast in Minnesota and Nebraska. Record plantings are expected in Nebraska, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The largest soybean-growing states would be Illinois and Iowa, with plantings of 9.5 million acres and 9.6 million acres, respectively.
