EU updates guidance on botanicals

Updated guidance on the agrochemical assessment of botanical active ingredients has been issued by the European Commission’s Health and Consumers Directorate General (DG SANCO). It will be used for applications submitted from October 1st. Experience with assessments of plant oils and plant extracts under the EU review of existing ais revealed a need to update the 2004 guidance on data requirements for such ais, DG SANCO says. The previous document covered only water and ethanol extracts, but “probably” less than half of plant extracts are obtained in this way, it notes. The scope of the new guidance has been extended to include other extraction methods such as pressing, milling and crushing.
