Monsanto/Pacific Seeds to debut dual-tolerance canola
Monsanto and the Australian seed company, Pacific Seeds (Toowoomba, Queensland), plan to make a limited introduction this year of genetically modified canola with tolerance to triazine herbicides and glyphosate. The companies have carried out a "small amount" of seed production of the first hybrid in the RT range, Hyola 525RT, ahead of the launch. The combination of traits will provide growers with the broad-spectrum knock-down of glyphosate and the residual activity of triazines, Pacific Seeds canola technical manager Justin Kudnig points out. Increasing herbicide resistance across multiple chemistries means that growers have "increasingly limited options with the current herbicide tolerance technologies available", he says. However, growers must apply only Roundup (glyphosate) or triazine herbicides to the RT hybrid because "it is not registered for those two herbicides to be tank-mixed together".
