Brazil Mato Grosso state faces emamectin challenge

The Brazilian state of Mato Grosso’s public prosecutor’s office is requesting the courts ban the state’s plant health protection agency, the Indea, from authorising the use of the insecticide, emamectin benzoate. The major soybean-growing state has declared a state of emergency against earworm (Helicoverpa armigera) infestations threatening its cotton and soybean crops (Agrow No 681, p 17). National legislation permits such states to approve the use of the insecticide as an emergency measure (Agrow No 677, p 17).
