J R Simplot seeks US tests for GM potatoes
US agribusiness company J R Simplot (Boise, Idaho) has applied to the US EPA for an experimental use permit (EUP) to test genetically modified potatoes with resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans). The Innate 2.0 potatoes contain the Rpi-vnt1 gene from the wild potato, Solanum venturii, which expresses the VNT1 protein. The company plans to test the potatoes in ten states on a total of 97.8 acres (39.6 ha) between spring and October 2014. The EUP is open to public comment until May 9th. Last year, J R Simplot sought USDA deregulation for Innate potatoes modified for low acrylamide potential and reduced black spot bruise.
