Positive EU crop sowings confirmed

EU cereal and oilseed sowings remain positive, says the European farm co-operatives group, Copa-Cogeca, in an update to its earlier forecasts (Agrow No 680, p 8). Mild weather led to good winter sowings. However, there are concerns that durum wheat plantings are down, despite the good weather. Elsewhere, Baltic states have suffered around 80% winter kill in cereals and are now seeking spring varieties. There is some uncertainty whether cereal farmers will have sufficient cash flow to cover increasing agrochemical costs, the group notes. It has made small adjustments to its total area forecasts, with a slight increase in cereals to 56.7 million ha and oilseeds to 11.8 million ha, while protein crops edge down to 1 million ha.
