Brazil CTNBio approves Oxitec’s GM mosquito

Brazil has provisionally approved the sale and use of UK company Oxitec’s (Abingdon, Oxfordshire) genetically modified mosquito, OX513A, as a vector control for dengue mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti). OX513A is a strain of the species that contains a dominant lethal gene and a marker gene, which are passed onto offspring that do not live to adulthood. The development in Brazil has included the University of Sao Paulo and the Moscamed Commission, which provides a bio-factory to mass produce the mosquitoes.
