Bayer opens US bee research facility
Bayer CropScience has officially opened its bee research facility at its US headquarters in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Work began on the $2.4 million, 6,000 sq ft (557 m2) North American Bee Care Center last year (Agrow No 665, p 3). It houses a laboratory and research apiary, along with education, training and office facilities. The site includes honey bee colonies, "pollinator-friendly" gardens and a screened hive observation area for educational purposes. It aims to foster a "significant improvement in honey bee health and stewardship measures and best management practices", the company notes. The centre complements a research apiary in Clayton, North Carolina and a global bee care centre, which was established in Monheim, Germany in 2012 (Agrow No 635, p 3).
