French Parliament passes bill on GM maize ban
The French National Assembly, the country's lower house of Parliament, has passed a bill prohibiting the cultivation of genetically modified maize. The action follows a ban by the Ministry of Agriculture last month on the sale, use and cultivation of Monsanto's GM insect-resistant MON810 maize (Agrow No 685, p 15). The latest action by the Parliament provides more legal basis for the Ministry's ban, which on two previous occasions has been nullified by the French council of state, the Conseil d'État (Agrow No 670, p 20). French maize growers and seed companies have already appealed to the council against the Ministry's action (Agrow ibid).
