EFSA issues guidance on protected crop agchems
Finalised guidance on the assessment of agrochemicals used on crops grown in greenhouses or under cover has been issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). It advises how to assess the emissions of active ingredients and transformation products to the environment. The EFSA held a public consultation on draft guidelines last year (Agrow No 666, p 5). The work is part of a project to develop specific assessment methods for protected crops, as current guidance only relates to crops in open fields. The guidance covers the clustering and ranking of emissions in different exposure scenarios. It includes various approaches for: emissions to soil, air, and ground and surface water; soil-bound and soil-less production systems; and different types of temporary and permanent structures. The document is on the EFSA’s website at: http://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/3615.htm.
