EU re-registers 2-phenylphenol fungicide
The fungicide, 2-phenylphenol, has been re-registered in the EU, on the condition that it is only used as a post-harvest fungicide for indoor use in closed drench chambers. The active ingredient was in the fourth round of the EU review of existing ais and was added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) on January 1st 2010. Member states have until December 31st 2010 to ensure that existing approvals match the uses authorised in Annex I. They then have until December 31st 2014 to re-register all existing products to comply with risk mitigation conditions, including waste management practices. Approvals are dependent on the submission by December 31st 2011 of further data on: the potential for skin de-pigmentation for workers and consumers due to possible exposure to the metabolite, 2-phenylhydroquinone, on citrus peel; and confirmation of the accuracy of the analytical method used in residue trials.
