Rust on Brazilian sugar cane detected
The first Brazilian case of orange rust ( Puccinia kuehnii) on sugar cane has been detected, the Ministry of Agriculture says. Researchers alerted the Ministry to its emergence in the state of Sao Paulo in December. The Ministry’s plant health secretariat says it is seeking the implementation of a contingency plan against the pest for the entire state. Some 70% of the sugar cane area is planted with disease-resistant varieties. The Ministry’s control strategy will principally involve extending the use of such varieties.
