US proposes approval of laminarin biopesticide
The US EPA has proposed the registration of French company Laboratoires Goëmar’s (Saint-Malo) biopesticide, VacciPlant (laminarin 3.5%), for the control of fungal and bacterial diseases on a range of fruit and vegetable crops. VacciPlant acts as a disease resistance activator. Laminarin is a naturally occurring oliggosacharide that is virtually non-toxic and poses no dietary risks to humans, the EPA notes. No residue studies are required to support an exemption from tolerances, it adds. The proposed approval decision is open to public comment until February 4th.
