EU farmers hit by lower incomes in 2009

EU farmers suffered an average decline of 12.2% in income in 2009, according to the first estimates for the year from Eurostat, the European Commission’s statistics office. While the cost of agricultural inputs was lower, this was more than offset by a sharp decline in prices for produce. Crop prices fell by 12.4%, led by cereals (-27.5%), industrial crops (-15.6%), olive oil (-14.7%) and fruit (-12.3%).
