UK court fines illegal pesticide possessor
The Norwich Magistrates Court in the UK has imposed a fine of £600 ($967 ) on a person, George Farrow, for storing the unapproved pesticide product, Cymag (sodium cyanide). Products containing the active ingredient were used in the past for rabbit and rat control in the UK but approval for sale, use and storage of these products was revoked in December 2004. On being exposed to water, the ai releases a poisonous gas, hydrogen cyanide. Mr Farrow was earlier issued an enforcement notice when a number of unapproved pesticide products were found on his premises as part of an enquiry into the death of a barn owl. The notice directed him to safely dispose of the unapproved products via a licensed waste disposal company, But Mr Farrow failed to comply, which led to the decision to prosecute him.
