Indian Ministers disagree on Bt aubergines

The Indian Ministers for Agriculture and the Environment have expressed differing opinions over who has the ultimate authority for deciding whether to give the go-ahead for the commercial cultivation of genetically modified insect-resistant brinjal (aubergines). The Indian Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) approved in October the commercial cultivation of Bt brinjal developed by Monsanto licensee Mahyco ( Agrow No 578, p 24). With brinjal representing the first GM food crop in the country, the issue was controversial and the Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, deferred a decision, opting for further consultation. He began a series of public meetings across the country earlier this month ( Agrow No 584, p 18).
