EU extends use of chlormequat
The European Commission has extended the approved use of the plant growth regulator, chlormequat chloride, to non-edible crops. The active ingredient gained EU re-registration for use on cereals last year, after successfully completing the EU review of existing ais ( Agrow No 567, p 11). Belgium subsequently applied for an extension to use on ornamentals, while Sweden applied for use on grass for seed. The Commission accepted the countries’ evidence that the new uses would not cause any additional risks. Chlormequat’s listing in Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) has been amended to allow use on “cereals and non-edible crops”. EU member states have until May 29th 2010 to adopt the new provisions.
