Malathion gains EU re-registration
The insecticide/acaricide, malathion, is to be re-registered in the EU, following a positive vote by the EU Standing Committee for the Food Chain and Animal Health in January. Once officially confirmed by the European Commission, the active ingredient will be added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414). This is the second attempt for malathion, which has not been available in the EU since December 2008 after the Commission decided against re-registration in 2006. Cheminova resubmitted its application for approval in 2008 ( Agrow No 549, p 13). The company hails the Committee’s decision but says that the re-introduction of the ai in the EU will take several years.
