The Brazilian technical commission for biosafety, the CTNBio, has elected Dr Edilson Paiva as its president. He assumes the post immediately for a two-year term. Dr Paiva was previously vice-president under then incumbent Dr Walter Colli. He is an agronomist, who has researched biotechnology at the agricultural research corporation, the Embrapa. The CTNBio has sole authority to recommend approval of genetically modified crops to the Brazilian government.
