Argentine agchem market bounces back
Pesticide sales are rising in Argentina, national media report. Demand has bounced back along with the record soybean area, since the travails of last year. Drought impacted sales in the country in 2009. Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences and BASF claim that sales have since shot up in the country, business newspaper El Cronista Comercial reports. Pest and disease infestation is advanced and farmers are wary of a repeat of last year’s soybean losses. Dow expects record sales, while Monsanto is aiming to reproduce the peak sales in 2008 of its herbicide, Roundup (glyphosate), the newspaper adds. It quotes a BASF soybean produce manager noting that 40% of the crop has been applied with fungicide this year, compared with 20% last year. Industry expected the market to drop by up to 30% in 2009 ( Agrow No 571, pp 18-19).
