New EU group to look at REACH concerns
The European Commission has set up a “high level contact group” of regulator and industry representatives to address industry concerns about meeting the first deadline for submitting registration dossiers under the EU Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation. Submission deadlines start in November 2010, with the first group of substances being those that are high volume and/or most hazardous. Failure to register by the deadline will mean that the substance cannot be used or sold. The group aims to identify issues of concern and develop achievable actions that can be implemented by June. Last year, the then EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas rejected calls for the implementation of REACH to be suspended to help companies cut costs in the financial crisis ( Agrow No 569, p 10). Agrochemical intermediates and co-formulants are covered by REACH.
