China drafts clean agchem production targets

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued proposals to implement clean production technology in the country’s pesticide industry. The proposals highlight the following targets for the year 2012: the one-step “green” synthesis of the herbicide, ametryn; make the clean, high-grade production of the insecticide/acaricide, pirimiphos-methyl, industry-wide; that clean recycling of the glyphosate herbicide by-product, methyl chloride, and clean production technologies for pyrethroid insecticides and the insecticide, dimethoate, cover 80% of the industry; and that waste recycling technology for the production of diphenyl ether herbicides cover between 30% and 50% of the industry. The MIIT drafted new pesticide industry policies in September last year ( Agrow No 577, p 25).
