El Salvador agchem market competitive

The pesticide market in El Salvador has a “sufficiently available” product range, according to national newspaper La Prensa Grafica. It cites a recent study by market research firm Punto Final, which surveyed the major products of the three main segments, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides. There was “at least one substitute herbicide product for similar needs on a particular crop”. The sector is the largest, containing 53 importing companies in 2008, with combined revenues of $19.6 million. The country had 33 importers of insecticides covering 121 products. The study classified insecticides/pesticides by mode of action, finding 17.7% included at least three alternative products. The demand for fungicides lagged among the major segments, “but for 16%, the market supplied at least two alternatives, and for 7.6% five or more”.
