Bayer loses third US rice suit

Bayer CropScience has been ordered to pay more than $1 million to a US farmer in the latest case over losses due to rice contamination with an unregistered genetically modified line. The Woodruff County Circuit Court in Arkansas awarded compensatory damages of $532,643 and punitive damages of $500,000 to Lenny Joe Kyle, the Associated Press reports. Two previous cases resulted in awards totalling some $3.5 million ( Agrow No 585, p 15), but the latest case is the first in which punitive damages have been granted.
