EU leader defends GMO approval

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has defended the decision to approve the cultivation of BASF’s genetically modified improved starch Amflora potato. The GM line was cleared by new Health and Consumers Commissioner John Dalli earlier this month, representing the first cultivation approval for 12 years and coming 14 years after BASF first submitted its application ( Agrow No 587, p 12). Mr Barroso came under attack from MEP Rebecca Harms of the Greens/European Free Alliance party, with the support of some other MEPs, during the President’s “question hour” at the European Parliament.
