EFSA to strengthen GMO environmental risk assessment
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) proposes to increase data requirements for assessing the environmental risk of cultivating genetically modified crops. The revisions are the result of two years’ work since it was asked by the European Commission’s Environment Directorate-General to look at existing guidance ( Agrow No 537, p 10). In a related project, the EFSA has also issued a new scientific opinion on how to evaluate the effects of GM crops on non-target organisms. It is seeking comments on both documents by the end of April.
