Bayer/Mendel extend stress collaboration
Bayer CropScience and the US genomics company, Mendel Biotechnology (Haywood, California), have agreed a three-year extension to their collaboration on developing chemical products to regulate plant stress tolerance. The companies began a joint research programme in 2008 ( Agrow No 541, p 2). Bayer will screen candidate substances and Mendel will contribute key gene sequences responsible for controlling plant growth and environmental responses. The partnership is being extended to include the discovery of substances that regulate additional components of crop yield potential. “The development of products to strengthen plants and increase yields is a largely uncharted field of research,” says Dr Alexander Klausener, head of research at Bayer.
