Monsanto gets Brazil GMO injunction overturned
Monsanto has overturned an injunction of last year against it brought by a grower group. The Rio Grande do Sol state-based agricultural workers association, the Fetag-RS, was granted an injunction late in 2013 stopping Monsanto from adding a clause on the acquisition of the company’s genetically modified Intacta RR2 Pro (MON87701xMON89788) soybeans by local growers. That would cancel any right to compensation from a 2009 lawsuit against royalties on first-generation Roundup Ready soybeans. Monsanto agreed a deal with Brazilian soybean growers earlier last year for royalty payments on Intacta soybeans (Agrow No 669, p 18). The deal freed participating farmers from paying royalties on first-generation soybeans for the next two seasons, and waived all potential legal claims for payments previously made for the first-generation technology.
