US EPA to OK Dow's Enlist Duo
The US EPA has proposed the approval of Dow AgroSciences' herbicide, Enlist Duo (2,4-D choline 192 g/litre + glyphosate 204 g/litre), for use on genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Enlist maize (DAS40278) and Enlist soybeans (DAS68416). The proposed use would expand the current timing of applications of 2,4-D on maize and soybeans. It would allow applications of the 2,4-D choline salt formulation on maize up to 4 ft (1.2 m) tall and post-emergence applications to soybeans. 2,4-D is currently approved for use on maize up to 8 inches (0.2 m) tall and for pre-plant applications to soybeans. 2,4-D choline is less prone to drift and volatilisation than other forms of the herbicide, the EPA notes. The USDA has proposed the deregulation of Dow's Enlist maize and soybeans but there has been considerable opposition to the move (Agrow No 685, p 18). The EPA intends to wait until the USDA's review is complete before making a final decision on Enlist Duo. The proposed approval is open to public comment until May 30th.
