French council rejects MON810 ban appeal

The French council of state, the Conseil d’État, has rejected an appeal by French maize growers and seed companies to suspend the recent imposition of a ban by the Ministry of Agriculture on the cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize. The Ministry imposed the ban in March (Agrow No 685, p 15), which was followed by the general association of maize growers, the AGPM, and the main national farmers' union, the FNSEA, appealing the action to the council (Agrow ibid). The Conseil d’État adjudicates on disputes relating to government actions.
