Iran to carry out GM crop trials in 2014
Iranian authorities are to carry out field trials of genetically modified insect-resistant rice and cotton by the end of this year, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA). The country’s first GM rice was commercialised in 2004, since when political opposition became a barrier to further launches. A new government is supporting the development of GM crops, the ISAAA notes. The Agricultural, Research, Education and Extension Organization will oversee the trials.
