Sugar Research Australia seeks GM sugar cane tests
The industry-owned company, Sugar Research Australia (Indooroopilly, Queensland), has applied to the Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) to conduct small-scale field tests of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant sugar cane. The plants have been modified with four unidentified genes (one from a plant species and three from a bacterium). The company plans to test them at six sites between November 2015 and November 2021 on a total area of 25 ha per season. The OGTR expects to issue a risk assessment and management plan in August.
