US survey finds lower bee losses

US bee colony losses during the past winter were not as severe as recent years, but remain above levels beekeepers considered economically sustainable, according to the preliminary analysis of an annual survey conducted by the USDA and the Bee Informed Partnership. The survey found that beekeepers lost about 23% of their colonies, compared with an eight-year average of winter losses of 29.6%. It notes that beekeepers say that losses greater than 18.9% are unsustainable.
