EU edges closer to deal on GMO cultivation

Representatives of EU member states are close to agreeing a compromise deal on allowing national bans or restrictions on the cultivation of EU-approved genetically modified crops. Common ground was gained at a meeting of the committee of permanent representatives, Coreper, in late May, in preparation for the vote due by EU Environment Ministers in mid-June. Talks on the issue were restarted in March, after member states agreed that ongoing delays and disagreements over GM crop approvals could not continue (Agrow 684, p 13).
