EU to clarify Bt agchem approval status

The European Commission is to amend an old agrochemical approval decision from 2002 to resolve possible confusion over the authorisation status of strains of the bioinsecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). The 2002 decision listed delta-endotoxin of Bt as one of 320 active ingredients that would be withdrawn in 2003 because they were not supported through the EU review of existing ais. However, this could give rise to confusion as, since that time, several strains of Bt have been approved as agrochemical ais, the Commission says. It proposes to remove the delta-endotoxin entry in the 2002 legislation. The proposal was supported by the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health in May, and requires publication in the EU Official Journal before coming into force.
