Ceres to test GM sugar cane in S America
The US agricultural biotechnology and seed company, Ceres (Thousand Oaks, California), is to evaluate several of its traits in genetically modified sugar cane in South America this year. The evaluations will include traits for high sugar and drought tolerance. The company sees sugar cane as an out-licensing opportunity for traits that the company is developing for its own use in sorghum and other energy crops. Ceres has licensed its technology to other seed companies for use in rice, maize, soybeans, sugar beet and other crops.
