Anti-GMO group lobbies again on 1507 maize in EU
The anti-genetically modified crop group, Testbiotech, has again urged the European Commission not to proceed with the cultivation approval for DuPont/Dow AgroSciences’ GM insect-resistant Herculex I (1507) maize. The call comes despite the dismissal by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) of the group’s claim that the maize assessment is deficient. The decision-making process for 1507 maize was finally completed in February after many years of delay (Agrow No 683, p 10). However, the Commission gave no date for the formal approval, and is believed to be waiting until a deal is reached on separate proposals to allow national bans on the cultivation of EU-approved GM crops. EU Ministers reached agreement on the latter issue in June (see this issue).
