Sumitomo Chemical sets up Tanzanian subsidiary
Sumitomo Chemical has established a subsidiary named Sumitomo Chemical East Africa in Arusha, Tanzania. The company estimates Africa’s uncultivated area suitable for growing food grains at 450 million ha, accounting for more than half of the world’s total area of such land. It expects expansion of farmland and the agrochemical market and aims to boost its business further in Africa. Through the new subsidiary, Sumitomo Chemical will carry out market surveys and research and development on agrochemicals for crops such as paddy rice and maize. After evaluating the marketability of its products, the company will sell agrochemicals on the African market. It also intends to enhance its environmental health business for Africa, including insecticides for household and public health uses.
