US state Oregon unable to regulate GM crops

US state Oregon's Department of Agriculture (ODA) lacks the authority to regulate genetically modified crops or to collect data needed to map where GM and non-GM crops are grown, Agency director Katy Coba wrote in a letter sent this week to Governor John Kitzhaber. The ODA conducted the review of its authorities in response to a request made by Governor Kitzhaber last fall. The governor directed the review as part of a deal with state legislators that included his support for a new law that bars local governments from imposing any laws or rules to regulate farm practices in Oregon, including restrictions on GM crops.
