US EPA invites methyl bromide exemptions

The US EPA has invited applications for critical use exemptions (CUEs) for the fumigant, methyl bromide, for 2017. Applications must be submitted by September 30th. The US authorities will review them and submit a national nomination package to Montreal Protocol members by January 24th 2015. The parties to the Protocol are expected to authorise CUEs for 2017 by the end of 2015. The adoption of alternatives to methyl bromide has led many sectors to transition away from the ozone-depleting fumigant since most uses were phased out in developed countries under the Montreal Protocol in 2005. The number of sectors nominated for CUEs has fallen from 17 for 2006 to just two for 2016, the EPA points out.
