US hearing sounds rallying call for GMO proponents

US agricultural interests need to better communicate with the public about the benefits of biotechnology if they are to stem rising opposition to genetically modified organisms, witnesses told a US House of Representatives panel this week. "There is a large and growing number of consumers who stigmatise GMOs in the US," said Dr David Just, a behavioural economist at Cornell University. The industry has failed to explain the benefits of biotechnology and is "partly, if not wholly, to blame" for the rising "tide of irrational consumer fears" about GMOs, Dr Just told members of the House Agriculture subcommittee on horticulture, research, biotechnology and foreign agriculture.
