Canadian province weighs cost of neonicotinoid ban

A hypothetical restriction on the use of neonicotinoid insecticides in the Canadian province of Ontario would reduce revenues from maize and soybean production by more than Can$630 million (US$586 million) per year, according to a study by the non-profit research organisation, the Conference Board of Canada (CBC). The study was conducted with financial support from the farming group, Grain Farmers of Ontario, and the industry association, CropLife Canada. It follows moves by the new provincial government to restrict neonicotinoids to protect bees (Agrow No 692, p 20).
