New EU chief lukewarm on GMOs

The newly elected president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, intends to review EU legislation on genetically modified crops so that more account is taken of the views of member states that are against GMOs. “To me, it is simply not right that under the current rules, the Commission is legally forced to authorise new organisms for import and processing even though a clear majority of member states is against,” he told the European Parliament. Mr Juncker was presenting his political guidelines for the next Commission ahead of the Parliament’s vote on his presidency on July 15th.
