EU industry to advise on CAP
EU industry groups including the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA) and the biotechnology association, EuropaBio, have been accepted for inclusion in “civil dialogue groups” that will advise the European Commission on agricultural issues. They will be consulted by the Commission’s Agriculture Directorate General on matters related to the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). There are 14 civil dialogue groups. ECPA and EuropaBio are in the groups dealing with environment and climate change, international aspects of agriculture, and rural development. ECPA is also in groups covering the CAP, direct payments and “greening” measures, and organic crop farming, while EuropaBio is in a group on arable crops. The Directorate General invited applications in April and decided that 68 of the 103 organisations applying were eligible for membership. They include many of the 11 European food and agriculture groups that called earlier this year for a shift in EU agriculture and food policy towards greater support for new technologies and science-based regulation (Agrow No 688, p 10).
