Australia OKs Monsanto's TruFlex canola
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) concludes that Monsanto's genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant TruFlex (MON88302) canola poses negligible risks to human health and the environment. TruFlex tolerates higher rates of glyphosate herbicide and allows greater flexibility in glyphosate applications than the first-generation Roundup Ready canola, the company points out. Monsanto applied to the OGTR for a commercial licence for TruFlex canola earlier this year (Agrow No 683, p 25). Food Standards Australia New Zealand approved food derived from the canola line last year (Agrow No 655, p 21). It has been authorised for cultivation in the US and Canada, with food-use approvals in the EU, Japan, Mexico and South Korea. The OGTR's risk assessment and management plan is open to public consultation until September 18th.
