India vacillates again over GM crop trials

India's Environment Ministry has put on hold a clearance to field trials of 15 genetically modified crops by the Genetic Engineering Appraisals Committee (GEAC). The Committee cleared the trials in July but the decision resulted in vociferous opposition by the anti-GMO lobby, including coalition partners of the newly-formed government, which came into power in May. The consortium of Indian agbiotech companies, Able-Ag, has expressed its disappointment at the "anti-science, anti-domestic research recommendations, which seem motivated to kill the biotechnology sector in India".
